Mondays have a pretty bad reputation for a reason.
It’s hard to be dumped back into normal work and school life, especially if you didn’t have a super relaxing weekend. It’s kind of instantly overwhelming.
For the last few months, I’ve been abiding by what I call “The Monday Life Hack” and it’s been quite helpful. I think you’ll see why.
(I first read about this idea from TheNester.com)
How to Simplify Your Week with “The Monday Life Hack”
So what’s The Monday Life Hack?
The Monday Life Hack is that you don’t schedule anything extra to happen on Mondays.
- No doctor’s appointments
- No coffee dates
- No work meetings
- Nothing extra…
Here’s why it’s awesome:
You only have to deal with normal Monday stuff
Monday can be rough all on it’s own without any extra activities going on. It’s a much easier start to the week when you only have the normal craziness to deal with. No extra craziness.
You can get back into your normal weekly routine
We have a bad habit of staying up late on the weekends and completely getting out of our normal routines.
It’s nice to have a day to get back into our weekly routine. It sets the tone for the whole week instead of starting the week feeling rushed.
Sunday can just be Sunday
If we have special things happening on Monday, it kind of ruins my relaxing Sunday.
First of all, I’m worried I’ll forget that we have something going on because I haven’t flipped the page in my planner yet. Plus, I end up running around Sunday night trying to prep whatever we need for an appointment or activity.
As a generally anxious person, I have a hard time relaxing on Sunday knowing that something out of the ordinary is planned for the next day. It feels silly to admit, but it’s the truth.
How to make it work for you:
- Don’t schedule anything for a Monday! It’s as simple as that. Pick a different day to meet your friend, go to the doctor, or have that work meeting. No, it’s not always possible. But making an effort will make a big difference.
- Pick a different day. Maybe you like to get things done early in the week but would rather not have anything extra going on on Friday right before the weekend starts. Make it The Friday Life Hack. If there’s a day of the week that is particularly crazy and stressful for you, make that day a “nothing extra” kind of day.
The Monday Life Hack is such a simple idea, which makes it easy to overlook. But it makes so much sense! Why add extra appointments and commitments to a day that’s already a bit of a struggle?
Since I’ve been using this hack, I’ve noticed how much easier it makes Mondays. I don’t have to check my schedule on Sunday to figure out what we have going on. We’re not rushing to get ready for anything extra on Monday morning.
If you struggle with a crazy schedule and stressful Mondays (or stressful Sundays because you’re getting ready for Monday), then The Monday Life Hack might be helpful for you too.

I do this for both Friday and Monday. Monday is my day to stay home, catch up on house cleaning after the weekend while my daughter is in school. Friday is my day. I have all of my chores, laundry, housekeeping, etc all finished. It is my day to be lazy and not feel guilty about doing so, I refuse to schedule appts, etc on Mondays and Fridays.
This is a great hack!!

I love that! We had an appointment a little while ago on a late Friday afternoon and it kind of made the start to our weekend not very nice, so I definitely love that you take those two days for different reasons!

This is such a brilliant idea. When I was first starting to get back into an exercise routine I REFUSED to schedule a workout for Monday - it just wasn't going to happen. I do believe it's great to start the week off with a workout but if I'm just getting back into it, I knew I wouldn't commit to it.
